Featured Trimmer: Phil Hemphill, British Columbia, Canada.
Growing up on a dairy farm in New Brunswick, Canada, dairy cows have always been a central part of Phil’s life. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the cows and quota were sold in 1990 when Phil was heading off to Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
He obtained his BSc in Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science in 1993. With his passion for dairy cows, Phil began working as herdsman/farm manager on several elite dairy farms in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
After marrying his wife Lisa, a large animal veterinarian, in 1996, they moved to Ontario where they both worked from 1998-2007. While Phil was working as a herd manager for Woodfield farms, he began feeling like he wanted more from his job. The realization that he always enjoyed working with the hoof trimmers when they came to the farm led him to start Heritage Hooftrimming in 1999.
Phil enjoys trimming show cows and over the years has had the pleasure of trimming AC/AA winners and nominees as well as trimming a cow to be sold in public auction for over $1 million. He takes his job very seriously, taking care when working around the animals and has developed a special bond with all his clients.
After establishing a successful hooftrimming business in the Ottawa Valley after seven years, Phil sold the business ion 2007 and headed west to the Fraser Valley, BC, where his wife had accepted a job. Arriving in BC, he started up Heritage Hooftrimming all over again. In 4 years, he grew his business to a point where he has to expand. Phil has recently purchased a second Appleton Elevator chute. Both chutes have the Appleton Shuttle where the entire chute is completely controlled by a remote control on a belt loop. Phil believes that cow comfort is important and cow restraint and handling are the key to the success of his business.
Phil also sells semen for Alta Genetics to his hooftrimming clients and enjoys helping out at the shows and 4H functions. When he can find a spare afternoon, you will find him either on a golf course or working on his 5 acre hobby farm he and Lisa bought this past summer.
